Community Garden

RRRSI has been successful in receiving a grant from the Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal (FRRR) to plan, develop and establish a Community Garden in the Riverland, with the Uniting Church of Australia, Berri Branch, kindly offering our organisation a parcel of land next to their church for the purpose of establishing a Community Garden, approximately 1/5th of an acre to start with . It must be stated that the project is non denominational and has no direct connection with the Church of Christ, nor any other religious organisation but is aimed at community members. The location is just outside of the township, on the Old Sturt Highway heading towards the Monash turn off on the Uniting Church site.

The Community Garden will be one of open access to garden beds, fruit trees and the like, thus no allocation of plots will me made to avoid issues of ownership and potential conflict. All produce will be free to users of the garden and based on organic principles. The project is open to incorporate a multitude of facets, be that Art, Cooking, the aged, our young people, new arrivals from other countries, indigenous culture, multicultural contributions and so much more. It is hoped to set up a small committee that can oversee and manage the garden site and make collective decisions. The garden will offer a variety of opportunities to incorporate our particular environment and lifestyle into the site, e.g. rainwater tanks, horticultural machinery and much more. The overall aim to have a loose yet connected association of likeminded community members that enjoy the aspect of getting together and grow food.

The Aim

The aim is to establish a Community Garden based on allowing all members of the community to partake in the process of enjoying what a garden has to offer, be that aspects of socialisation, some time to reflect in peaceful and tranquil surrounds, plant or harvest some vegetables or fruit, assist with general maintenance of the garden and so many more.

How can you be involved?

We have rainwater connected and hope to include as many people as possible from our communities to help to shape the garden into a haven of ‘community’ and to reap the benefits of new friendships, food, connecting, sharing and not only growing food but growing lives.

We have set meetings dates for all interested parties to attend and to contribute, and they occur every Saturday from 10am at the Community Garden site.

Please contact us should you have any additional questions on 8582 3110 and we look forward to seeing you soon.
